Kinosaki Onsen Ryokan – The dreamy town of Kinosaki Onsen is only 2.5 hours away from Kyoto, but based on its fantasy-like atmosphere and gorgeous historic building structures, it may as well be worlds away. Hidden off the beaten path of hot spring towns that foreigners generally tend to visit, there is an air of nostalgia here that’s heightened by the lack of crowds, visitors quietly exploring on foot in their gorgeous yukata and geta (traditional Japanese robes and wooden sandals), weeping branches of trees hanging across the town’s river, and of course, the romantic illumination of the town after dark.
The old-school aesthetic of this town is the main draw. Time slows down at this place, and people find that the simple task of going for a stroll can immediately put people in a good mood. This is also a popular location for couples who are looking for a romantic getaway, as what can set the scene more than dressing up in gorgeous yukata, walking underneath the weeping willows hand in hand, taking in a beautiful night scene of lit up ryokans and canals.
